Poland - Mazurek (Fruit and Nut Topped Bars)

CRUST:

2 cups all purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter
1 egg
4 Tablespoons sour cream

TOPPING:

1 1/2 cups chopped raisins
1 1/2 cups chopped dates
1 cup chopped figs
1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts
1 Tablespoon lemon juice
2 eggs
1 cup sugar

Preheat oven 350º F.

Crust: Sift flour with salt and sugar into a bowl.  Cut butter into flour mixture with knife until crumbly.

Beat egg, mix with cream, add to flour.  Mix lightly with fork then press on greased (9 x 13 inch) pan.  Bake for 10 minutes.

Topping:  Reduce oven temperature to 325º F.  Chop raisins, dates, figs, walnuts very fine and mix with lemon juice.  Beat eggs with sugar until very light and stir into fruit-nut mixture.  Spread this over partially baked crust, return to oven at 325º F. and bake for 40 minutes.  Remove from oven, and while still warm cut diagonally into 2-inch bars.
